What PFAS are
Man-made chemicals that don't break down.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of man-made chemicals used for decades in firefighting foam, non-stick cookware, waterproof fabrics and food packaging. They are called “forever chemicals” because they barely break down, so they build up in the environment and in our bodies over time.
In June 2025 the National Health and Medical Research Council lowered the safe limits for PFAS in Australian drinking water. PFOS, the best-known type, now has a limit of 8 nanograms per litre. Read the NHMRC PFAS review.

What Sydney customers ask us.
Is there PFAS in Sydney tap water?
Sydney Water tests its drinking water for PFAS and publishes the results. Its latest results show levels below the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, which were tightened in 2025. A filter is an extra layer of protection on top of that, not a fix for unsafe water.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Yes. The membrane in our 6-stage reverse osmosis systems reduces PFOS and PFAS by up to 99%, according to Ecosoft's own testing. It is the most effective option for drinking and cooking water.
Does a whole-house filter remove PFAS?
Our whole-house system uses a Matrikx carbon block that reduces PFAS by around 95% at every tap and shower in the house. Many households pair it with reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking water.
Will a jug filter or a 3-stage carbon filter remove PFAS?
No. Standard jug filters and our 3 Stage under-sink filter improve taste and remove chlorine and sediment, but they are not designed to remove PFAS. For PFAS you need reverse osmosis or a whole-house carbon block system.
How often do the filters need changing?
Sediment and carbon cartridges are typically changed once a year. The reverse osmosis membrane lasts several years and is tested rather than replaced on a schedule. Servicing is a fixed $199.
